State’s Attorney Dan Wright announces formation of the Sangamon County Senior Support Alliance
Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright has announced formation of the Sangamon County Senior Support Alliance, a multidisciplinary elder abuse prevention and proactive enforcement initiative with local law enforcement, Senior Services of Central Illinois/Adult Protective Services, Area Agency on Aging for Lincolnland (“AgeLinc”) and community volunteers to coordinate resources in the fight to prevent and prosecute crimes against the elderly. The Sangamon County Senior Support Alliance will also help seniors protect themselves from victimization through community outreach and education.
The group is based upon the “Triad” concept which began in 1988 when the American Association of Retired Persons (“AARP”), the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Sheriff’s Association joined together to develop a model to convene resources of various stakeholders to prevent and proactively address crimes against the elderly. Today, Triad initiatives can involve first responders, prosecutors, social services, private businesses, and other organizations that work directly with elderly persons.
Sangamon County State’s Attorney, Dan Wright, said “For a number of reasons, elderly individuals may not always be able to protect themselves from victimization. Particularly those who suffer from memory impairment, older members of our community too often become targets for those who would take advantage of the vulnerable. This multi-disciplinary initiative will help us prevent elder abuse and coordinate resources to support early reporting, investigation and prosecution.”
The Sangamon County Senior Support Alliance will host a Facebook Live Senior Outreach Event on September 15, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. on the Sangamon County Government Facebook page (See attached event flier). The event will include helpful information from Sangamon County State’s Attorney Dan Wright, Sheriff Jack Campbell, Sangamon County Public Health Director Gail O’Neill, Springfield Police Department Chief Kenny Winslow, Senior Services of Central Illinois and AgeLinc.
